Also on the King Price Derby Series roster were two fantastic derbies taking place in the Eastern Cape. Wynberg traveled to Gqeberha to play at Grey High and Dale College took on Queen’s College. Both played amongst other top rugby match-ups from Saturday’s action within the province.
With a change in weather from the Western Cape, Wynberg traveled away from the wet Western Cape to a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Gqeberha to take on Grey High. A fiery atmosphere led the lads onto the pitch as both were gunning for a huge game. It was the away side who started the best however, outscoring Grey 20-7 at the break on the Kolisi field. Grey however would return with a renewed passion, scoring a penalty and a converted try within the first seven minutes in the second half. Closing the gap to three points. Despite the early fightback, Wynberg would steady their boat well, responding with a patient build-up try, finished off by skipper Jaythen Orange. Wynberg would surge forward again three minutes later, crossing the try line once more. The half continued to bless the fans with action as Grey would respond soon after with a try of their own. However, Wynberg would put the game agonisingly out of the home side’s reach with their last try of the game 12 minutes before the end. With the score poised at 32-22. Grey would however, get a late try through Daniel Naude’s second of the game. In the end though it was to be Wynberg’s dominance through the majority of the game that would see the Southern suburb side get the job done. Keeping their lead despite losing the second half 20-12. The final score wrapped up at 32-27 in favour of the traveling school. Overall a solid poster game for school boy rugby in the country.
In the other King Price Derby Series match, the stage would also be a sunny afternoon, as King Williams Town hosted a huge derby between Dale College and Queen’s College. The first 35 saw a relatively cagey affair take place, with the away side of Queen’s taking a slim 7-6 lead despite going down to 14 to end the half through a yellow card. The second half however would start explosively as Queen’s number 14, Ayathanda Mtyando who runs the 100m and 200m for Queen’s, would break away with an interception to run over within the first 2 minutes of the half. A noticeable tempo shift
was obvious as five minutes later Dale would respond with 7 points of their own to raise the noise level around the ground. With barely 8 minutes played of the 2nd, the score was 14-13 in favour of the visitors. Minutes began to tick by as the game once more descended into a tight and tense affair, with Queen’s enjoying the majority of the territory. After increased pressure from the visitors, Dale’s defense would give way once more with five minutes left as Queen’s settled their fans’ nerves with a try and therefore taking an eight point lead. Ultimately, seeing the away side to victory in a sun-soaked King Williams Town and extending an impressive winning streak to seven. A big challenge awaits for Queen’s however, as they take on Grey High who likewise toppled Dale with ease.
Also in the Eastern Cape, the two Grahamstown schools of St. Andrews and Graeme College played out to an entertaining 17-10 game in favour of the white and blue outfit. Selborne would also grab a win at home against Port Rex 27-16. Selborne will also be in action in one of the feature King Price Derby Series games next weekend as they host Dale College who will make a return to the event. Be sure to catch this game and others on Supersport Schools platforms.
